How the Unemployment Benefits (NASpI) Calculator Works

The NASpI calculator (New Social Insurance for Employment) lets you estimate the monthly amount and duration of the unemployment benefit you are entitled to in case of involuntary job loss. NASpI is managed by INPS (the Italian Social Security Institute) and represents the main social safety net for employees in Italy.

Requirements for NASpI Eligibility

  • Involuntary unemployment: dismissal, expiration of a fixed-term contract, resignation for just cause, or resignation during the protected maternity period
  • Contribution requirement: at least 13 weeks of contributions in the 4 years preceding employment termination
  • Work requirement: at least 30 actual working days in the 12 months preceding termination
  • Availability declaration: submission of the DID (Declaration of Immediate Availability) at the Employment Center

How the NASpI Amount Is Calculated

The NASpI amount is based on the average salary over the last 4 years. The calculation follows these rules:

  • If the average monthly salary is less than or equal to a reference amount (updated annually by INPS), NASpI equals 75% of the salary
  • If the salary exceeds that threshold, 25% of the difference between the salary and the reference amount is added
  • There is a monthly cap that cannot be exceeded (approximately 1,550 euros in 2026, subject to inflation adjustment)
  • Starting from the 6th month (8th month for workers over 55), the amount is reduced by 3% per month (the so-called tapering)

Duration of the Benefit

NASpI is paid for a number of weeks equal to half the contribution weeks accrued in the 4 years preceding termination, up to a maximum of 24 months. For example, with 4 full years of contributions (208 weeks), you receive 104 weeks of NASpI, or 24 months.

How to Use the Calculator

Enter your average gross monthly salary over the last 4 years and the number of contribution weeks accrued in the same period. The calculator will show you the initial monthly amount, the amount after tapering, the total duration of the benefit, and an estimate of the total amount received. You can also compare different scenarios to understand the impact of different salary levels on the calculation.

When and How to File the Application

The NASpI application must be submitted to INPS within 68 days of employment termination. You can submit it online through the INPS website using SPID/CIE digital identity, through the INPS Contact Center (803.164), or through a patronage office. The benefit begins on the 8th day after the termination date if the application is filed within the first eight days, or on the day after submission if filed later.

Important Tips

Remember that while receiving NASpI you can engage in self-employed or dependent work within certain income limits, by notifying INPS in advance. If you find a new permanent job, you can opt for early lump-sum payment (entrepreneurship incentive). Additionally, the notional contributions credited during NASpI count toward both pension eligibility and pension amount.
