Italian Degree Grade Calculator — Weighted Average, Starting Base and Thesis Points

Calculator

Degree Grade Calculator

From the weighted average of your exams to the starting base out of 110, the thesis points and the estimated final grade

How do you want to start?
Grade (18-30)CFULode
Your university's rules (you'll find them in the final exam regulations)

The starting base is obtained by multiplying the weighted average by 110 and dividing by 30 (that is, by 11/3). The final exam points and any bonuses provided for by your course regulations are added to the base points. This is an informational estimate: the official grade is set by the graduation committee.

How the degree grade calculator works

The Italian degree grade (voto di laurea) is expressed out of 110 and is made of two parts: the starting base, derived from the exam average, and the points awarded by the committee for the final exam, to which some courses add bonuses. This free calculator uses a generic formula with your course's rules as parameters: enter grades and CFU (university credits), or the average directly, thesis points, bonuses and rounding criterion, and you get the estimated grade, the points missing to reach 110 and the average required. The calculation runs in your browser.

The formula: weighted average, base out of 110 and final points

The first step is the CFU-weighted average: each grade is multiplied by the exam's credits, the products are added up and divided by the total credits. A 30 in a 12-CFU exam weighs twice as much as a 30 in a 6-CFU exam, which is why the weighted average can differ from the arithmetic mean, which the calculator shows anyway for comparison. Exams assessed as pass/fail (idoneità) have no grade and are left out.

The second step converts the average from a scale of 30 to a scale of 110: base = weighted average × 110 / 30. The third adds the final exam points and any bonuses to the base: grade = base + thesis points + lode points + other bonuses, rounded to an integer and never above 110.

The rules that vary from university to university

There is no single national formula: each course sets its own rules in the final exam regulations. That is why in the calculator they are fields to fill in rather than fixed values:

  • Thesis points: the maximum is set by the course regulations, sometimes with different scores depending on the type of thesis.
  • Lode (honours) in exams: some courses count a 30 cum laude as 30, others give it a higher value in the average (for example 31), and others award extra points based on the number of lodi.
  • Other bonuses: graduating on time, international mobility such as Erasmus and similar activities, when the regulations provide for them.
  • Rounding: the final grade is an integer, but the criterion depends on the university.

A concrete example: on the «Redazione della tesi e voto finale» (thesis writing and final grade) page of the Electronic Engineering degree at the Università di Bologna, the average is weighted on credits and converted to a scale of 110 with the ratio 110/30, a 30 cum laude counts as 30, the final exam is worth at most 4 points including rounding, and students who graduate on time have their average multiplied by 1.0325 (1.016 in the first year beyond the standard duration). The calculator does not apply a percentage bonus like this on its own: you can enter it in the «Other bonuses» field as the difference, that is base × 0.0325.

A second example: in the grade determination rules of the single-cycle master's degree in Medicine and Surgery at the Università di Pisa, in force from the June 2026 graduation sessions, the base is the weighted average × 110 / 30 without rounding, the total is rounded only at the end to the nearest integer (from 0.50 upwards) and lode can only be awarded with a final score of at least 113.

How the calculator handles rounding

The default criterion is the nearest integer: from .50 up it rounds up, below .50 it rounds down. With this rule a total of 109.50 is enough to get 110. If you choose «always round up», exceeding 109 is enough; with «always round down» or «none» you need a full 110. The chosen criterion also applies to the points you are missing and is shown below the grade.

Calculation example

Four exams: 28 in a 12-CFU exam, 30 cum laude in a 9-CFU one (lode counted as 30), 27 in a 6-CFU one and 29 in a 9-CFU one. The weighted average is (28 × 12 + 30 × 9 + 27 × 6 + 29 × 9) / 36 = 1,029 / 36 = 28.58, compared with an arithmetic mean of 28.50. With 4 thesis points and 0.5 bonus points:

ItemValue
Weighted average28.58 / 30
Starting base (28.58 × 110 / 30)104.81
Total with 4 thesis points and 0.5 bonus109.31
Grade rounded to the nearest integer109 / 110
Grade rounded up110 / 110
Thesis points to reach 110 (nearest integer)at least 4.20
Average to reach 110 with 4 thesis points and 0.5 bonusat least 28.64

The same transcript gives 109 or 110 depending on the rounding rule.

Limits of the estimate and lode

The maximum grade is 110: if the sum exceeds it, the calculator stops at 110 and tells you that you have reached the threshold. Lode (honours), however, is not automatic: it is awarded by the committee under the conditions set by the regulations, which in some courses require an overall score above 110. The calculator does not handle percentage multipliers, the exclusion of individual exams from the average, or the grids some committees use to award thesis points. The reference is always the final exam regulations published by your university.

Frequently asked questions

Do ungraded (pass/fail) exams count towards the average?

No: pass/fail assessments (idoneità) have no grade out of 30 and therefore are not entered. Enter only graded exams and their CFU: the calculator weights them by credits and works out the weighted average.

How is the degree grade rounded?

It depends on the course regulations. The calculator's default rule is the nearest integer, rounding up from .50: with this rule a total of 109.50 becomes 110. You can also choose always rounding up, always rounding down or no rounding.

Does a 30 cum laude count as 30 or more in the average?

It depends on the course regulations: some count it as 30, others give it a higher value in the average or award extra points for lodi. In the calculator you can choose whether a 30 cum laude is worth 30, 31, 32 or 33 and enter the points per lode with their maximum cap.

Why might my official grade be different?

Because your course regulations may include rules the calculator does not know: their own grids for thesis points, percentage bonuses, a different rounding or the exclusion of some exams from the average. This tool gives an estimate: the reference remains the final exam regulations published on the university's website.
