How Many Days Until Christmas — Countdown

How many days until Christmas
The countdown updated every second, in days, weeks and hours, also for Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day and Epiphany
The days left are calendar days: from today to tomorrow there is 1 day left. The countdown in hours, minutes and seconds instead runs to 00:00 on the holiday, counts real time (including the extra hour when clocks go back to standard time) and uses your device’s clock and time zone: if your device’s time is wrong, so is the count.

How many days until Christmas: how the counter works
This counter tells you how many days are left until Christmas starting from today and updates itself: after 25 December it starts counting again towards the following year’s Christmas. Below the number of days you will find the countdown in days, hours, minutes and seconds, the weeks and hours left and the day of the week the holiday falls on. With the buttons at the top you can also see how long is left until Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day and Epiphany.
The calculation takes place in your browser, using your device’s date and time: no data is sent or saved. To find out how long is left until Christmas from a day other than today, change the «Starting from» field and the result updates immediately; the «Back to today» button resets the count to the current date.
How the days left are counted
The big number shows calendar days: how many times the date has to change to reach 25 December. The counter converts the two dates into a sequential day number and takes the difference, so 30- and 31-day months and leap years are already included. On 24 December there is 1 day left, on the 25th the counter wishes you Merry Christmas and from the 26th it moves on to the next Christmas. The nights to sleep are the same as the calendar days, while the weeks are the same days divided by seven, with the remainder.
The countdown, instead, measures the exact time between this moment and 00:00 on 25 December. This is why its days can be one fewer than the calendar days: at 3 p.m. on 1 December there are 24 calendar days left, but the countdown shows 23 days and 9 hours. The hours are real too: on the night of the last Sunday in October, when clocks go back to standard time, the clock goes back one hour and that night lasts one hour longer. The counter takes this into account, so the hours are not always the days multiplied by 24.
Calculation example
These results, produced by the calculator, apply to any year, because a 29 February never falls between these dates and Christmas. The hours are counted from midnight on the starting date, using Italian time.
| From | Days to Christmas | Weeks | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 October | 85 | 12 weeks and 1 day | 2,041 |
| 1 November | 54 | 7 weeks and 5 days | 1,296 |
| 1 December | 24 | 3 weeks and 3 days | 576 |
| 8 December | 17 | 2 weeks and 3 days | 408 |
| 24 December | 1 | 1 day | 24 |
1 October is the only row where the hours exceed the days multiplied by 24 by one (85 × 24 = 2,040): between 1 October and Christmas the clocks go back to standard time. From 26 December to the following Christmas there are 364 days left, which become 365 when a 29 February falls in between, for example from 26 December 2027 to Christmas 2028.
What day Christmas falls on from 2026 to 2032
| Year | 25 December |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Friday |
| 2027 | Saturday |
| 2028 | Monday |
| 2029 | Tuesday |
| 2030 | Wednesday |
| 2031 | Thursday |
| 2032 | Saturday |
2028 skips Sunday because it is a leap year: 29 February shifts all following dates by one extra day. Christmas Eve always falls the day before Christmas. New Year’s Day comes exactly one week later and therefore falls on the same day of the week, while Epiphany comes five days after New Year’s Day: if Christmas is on a Friday, as in 2026, New Year’s Day 2027 is also on a Friday and Epiphany is on a Wednesday.
When the result may not add up
The counter uses the device’s clock and time zone. If the time on your phone or computer is wrong, so is the countdown and, close to midnight, even the starting day. If you are abroad, the count runs to midnight where you are, not Italian midnight. The countdown ends at the start of the holiday: for Christmas Eve it is midnight between 23 and 24 December, not the night between the 24th and the 25th. The counter does not know about holidays off, long weekends or closures: it only counts calendar days, for dates between 1900 and 2999.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are left until Christmas from 1 December?
From 1 December to Christmas there are 24 days left, that is 3 weeks and 3 days. The count does not change from one year to the next, because there is no 29 February between the two dates: from 1 November the days are always 54 and from 8 December always 17.
Why does the countdown show one day fewer?
Because it measures the exact time left until 00:00 on 25 December, while the big number counts calendar days. At 3 p.m. on 1 December there are 24 calendar days left, but the countdown shows 23 days and 9 hours: the current day has already partly gone by.
Does the countdown take the clock change into account?
Yes. It uses the device’s clock and counts real time, so on the night of the last Sunday in October, when clocks go back to standard time, it adds the extra hour. This is why from 1 October to Christmas there are 2,041 hours and not 2,040. The calendar days, however, do not change.
What happens after 25 December?
From 26 December the counter moves on to the following year’s Christmas: there are 364 days left, or 365 if a 29 February falls in between, as from 26 December 2027 to Christmas 2028. On 25 December the counter shows no days, but wishes you Merry Christmas.
