How the Vehicle Tax (Bollo Auto) Calculation Works
Our vehicle tax calculator determines the amount of the regional vehicle tax based on the vehicle's power (expressed in kW) and its Euro emission class. The calculation follows the official rates established by national legislation, with the option to apply specific variations set by each Region.
Base and Excess Rates
The vehicle tax is calculated by applying two different rates: a base rate for the first 100 kW of power and a higher rate (approximately 50% more) for each kW above that threshold. For example, for a Euro 4, 5, or 6 vehicle, the base rate is 2.58 euros per kW up to 100 kW, and 3.87 euros for each kW over 100. For Euro 0 vehicles, the rates rise to 3.00 and 4.50 euros per kW respectively.
The formula is simple: Tax = (kW up to 100 x base rate) + (kW exceeding 100 x excess rate). For a Euro 5 car with 90 kW, the tax will be: 90 x 2.58 = 232.20 euros. For a Euro 5 car with 150 kW: (100 x 2.58) + (50 x 3.87) = 258 + 193.50 = 451.50 euros.
Euro Classes and Their Impact on Rates
The Euro emission class directly affects the tax amount: more polluting vehicles (Euro 0, 1, 2) pay higher rates, encouraging the renewal of the vehicle fleet. Euro 4, 5, and 6 classes share the same rate, which is the lowest available. The Euro class of the vehicle is indicated on the vehicle registration document at entry V.9.
Regional Variations
As a regional tax, the vehicle tax can have different amounts depending on the Region where the owner resides. Some Regions (such as Campania and Liguria) apply surcharges above the national rates, while others maintain the base rates. The autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano have their own rate systems. The calculator allows you to select the Region to obtain an amount as close as possible to the actual tax due.
Super Tax for High-Power Vehicles
For vehicles with power exceeding 185 kW, an additional state surcharge (super tax) of 20 euros per kW above the threshold applies. This surcharge decreases progressively with the age of the vehicle: 60% after 5 years, 30% after 10 years, 15% after 15 years, and zero after 20 years from registration. The super tax is paid separately using form F24.
Main Exemptions
The following are exempt from vehicle tax: electric vehicles for the first 5 years from registration (with subsequent reductions varying by Region); historic vehicles over 30 years old (subject only to a reduced circulation tax if used on public roads); vehicles registered to persons with disabilities under Law 104/1992 (within engine displacement limits). For plug-in hybrid cars, several Regions provide temporary exemptions of 3-5 years.
Important Note
The calculator result is indicative. The exact vehicle tax amount can be verified through the official ACI service (bolloauto.aci.it) or your Region's website, where updated rates and any local tax breaks in effect are available.
