How to Use the Tax Return Simulator
Our Tax Return Simulator (Modello 730) lets you estimate the outcome of your income tax return before you officially file it. Enter your income, deductions, and withholdings to find out whether you will receive a refund or owe additional tax.
What This Tool Calculates
The simulator produces the following results:
- Gross income tax (IRPEF) calculated using the 2026 tax brackets (23%, 35%, 43%)
- Total deductions you are entitled to (employment, dependents, expenses)
- Net income tax after deductions
- Estimated regional and municipal surcharges
- Final balance: expected refund or amount due
Who Can Use the 730 Form
The 730 form is intended for employees and retirees. It cannot be used by self-employed individuals with a VAT number, those with business income, or those with specific foreign income (who must use the Redditi PF form instead). The advantage of the 730 is its simplicity: refunds or amounts due are handled directly by the employer or pension institution through the paycheck or pension payment.
2026 Deadlines
The 2026 pre-filled 730 (for 2025 income) is available on the Italian Revenue Agency website from April 15. It can be modified and submitted from May 20. The filing deadline is September 30, 2026. Those who file by June receive the refund as early as the July paycheck.
Key Deductions
The most significant deductions you can enter in the simulator include: medical expenses at 19% (with a 129.11 euro threshold), mortgage interest on primary residence (up to 4,000 euros), education and university expenses, home renovation at 50%, energy efficiency bonus from 50% to 65%, supplementary pension fund contributions (deductible up to 5,164.57 euros). The simulator automatically applies the limits set by current regulations.
How the Refund Is Calculated
The calculation follows the income tax logic: deductible expenses are subtracted from total income to obtain taxable income. Tax brackets are applied (23% up to 28,000 euros, 35% up to 50,000 euros, 43% above) to obtain the gross tax. Deductions are subtracted to obtain the net tax. If the withholdings already paid by the employer exceed the net tax, the difference is the refund.
Documents to Prepare
For an accurate simulation, have the following at hand: the employer's Certificazione Unica (CU), the total medical expenses (verifiable on the Sistema TS), the mortgage interest certification from the bank, school expense receipts, and invoices for renovation work with related bank transfers.
Important Limitations
This simulator provides an indicative estimate of the 730 outcome. The official calculation is performed by the Italian Revenue Agency at the time of filing. Differences may arise from specific regional/municipal surcharges in your municipality, prior year advance payments, or special situations not handled by the simulator.
