How to Use the Accrued Vacation Calculator
Our Accrued Vacation Calculator lets you find out in seconds how many vacation days you have accumulated, how many you have used, and how many you have left. Just enter your contract details and you are all set.
What This Tool Calculates
By entering your applicable collective bargaining agreement (CCNL), your hire date, the annual vacation days provided by your contract, and the days already taken, the calculator automatically determines:
- Total vacation days entitled for the current year
- Vacation days accrued up to today's date (calculated proportionally to months worked)
- Remaining vacation days still available
- Monetary value of each unused vacation day
- Deadline by which to use carried-over vacation days (18-month rule)
How the Calculation Works
Vacation days accrue proportionally to the months of actual service. The formula applied is: Accrued vacation = (Annual days / 12) × months worked. A month is counted as complete if you worked at least 15 calendar days. The calculator also accounts for the difference between full-time and part-time contracts (horizontal and vertical).
Vacation Rights in Italy
Italian law (Legislative Decree 66/2003, Art. 10) guarantees a minimum of 4 weeks of paid vacation per year for every employee. Of these, at least 2 weeks must be taken consecutively during the year they are accrued, if the employee requests it. The remaining 2 weeks must be used within 18 months from the end of the accrual year. Most collective bargaining agreements provide better terms, with 26 or more days per year.
Full-Time and Part-Time
If you work horizontal part-time (fewer hours per day, every day), you are entitled to the same number of vacation days as full-time employees. If you work vertical part-time (only certain days of the week), vacation days are proportionally adjusted based on actual working days. Our calculator handles both cases.
Unused Vacation Days and Final Settlement
Unused vacation days cannot be monetized during the employment relationship (the so-called monetization prohibition). The only exception is termination of employment: in case of resignation, dismissal, or contract expiration, remaining vacation days are paid out in the final paycheck. The calculator also estimates the gross monetary value of unused vacation days, useful for verifying the accuracy of the final settlement.
Who This Calculator Is For
This tool is designed for employees, HR managers, payroll consultants, and anyone who wants to quickly and accurately check their vacation status. The necessary data can be easily found at the bottom of the pay slip, where accrued, used, and remaining vacation days are listed.
