How the contributo unificato calculator works

The contributo unificato (unified court fee) is the sum paid to the State to enter a case on the court docket: it is paid by the party that first appears in the proceedings or files the application, and it is due again at each level of proceedings. It is governed by articles 9 and 13 of DPR 30 May 2002, no. 115, the Testo unico sulle spese di giustizia (Consolidated Act on Court Costs). The amount depends on the type of proceedings and, for many cases, on the value of the dispute, divided into brackets.

Choose the proceedings, enter the value of the case (or whether it is indeterminable) and the level of proceedings, then press «Calculate». The calculation takes place in your browser and shows the contribution, the steps with the relevant paragraph and, when due, the flat-rate advance payment of 27 euros under article 30.

Brackets and calculation rules

Value of the caseContribution at first instance
up to €1,100€43
over €1,100 and up to €5,200€98
over €5,200 and up to €26,000€237
over €26,000 and up to €52,000€518
over €52,000 and up to €260,000€759
over €260,000 and up to €520,000€1,214
over €520,000€1,686

Cases of indeterminable value pay 518 euros, or 237 euros if they fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the justice of the peace. The value, excluding interest, must be declared in the initial filing: if the declaration is missing, the highest bracket applies. The following rules then apply to the base amount:

  • half for the special proceedings of book IV, title I, of the code of civil procedure, including the payment order and the opposition to it, and for employment and public employment disputes (paragraph 3);
  • increase by half on appeal and double at the Court of Cassation (paragraph 1-bis); on appeal the reduction for special proceedings no longer applies, except for employment cases, because according to the Ministero della giustizia (Ministry of Justice) the special nature of the procedure ends at first instance;
  • double before the specialised business court sections (paragraph 1-ter);
  • increase by half if the party does not state its tax code in the initial filing and, in tax proceedings, also if the lawyer does not state their PEC (certified email) address (paragraph 3-bis).

Employment, social security and income exemption

In employment, public employment and social security disputes, the contribution is due only from those whose IRPEF taxable income, as shown in the latest tax return, exceeds three times the limit for legal aid at the State's expense (art. 9, paragraph 1-bis). The current limit is 13,659.64 euros and is updated every two years: the threshold is therefore 40,978.92 euros. The instructions of the Giustizia amministrativa (administrative justice service) also add the income of cohabiting family members. Those above the threshold pay 43 euros for social security cases and half the bracket for employment cases.

At the Court of Cassation the law requires the contribution «in the amount referred to in article 13, paragraph 1», but it is not settled whether it should also be doubled: for these appeals the calculator does not give an amount.

Tax proceedings and TAR

In tax proceedings the contribution ranges from 30 euros (up to 2,582.28 euros) to 1,500 euros (over 200,000 euros), with intermediate brackets of 60, 120, 250 and 500 euros; indeterminable value pays 120 euros, and the amounts do not change at second instance. Before the TAR (regional administrative court) and the Consiglio di Stato the fee is 650 euros; 300 euros for access, silence, citizenship, residence, stay, entry and compliance; 1,800 euros for the expedited procedure; from 2,000 to 6,000 euros, depending on the value, for public procurement and acts of independent authorities. For public employment the instructions of the Giustizia amministrativa indicate 325 euros, with the same income exemption. On appeal the amounts increase by half (law 228/2012, art. 1, paragraph 27), and by a further half if the lawyer does not state their PEC address and fax number or the party does not state its tax code (paragraph 6-bis.1).

Limits of the calculation

The result is indicative and does not replace a check by your lawyer or the court registry. It does not take into account the exemptions of article 10, such as proceedings on child maintenance payments, the contribution for counterclaims, third-party joinders and interventions (art. 14, paragraph 3), nor the double contribution: if the appeal is rejected in full or declared inadmissible or unprocessable, the party that brought it pays a further amount equal to the contribution (paragraph 1-quater).

Frequently asked questions

How much is the contributo unificato for a payment order?

You pay half the bracket amount for the claimed credit: for 15,000 euros it is 118.50 euros, plus 27 euros of flat-rate advance payment. The same reduction applies to the opposition to the order, but not to the appeal against the judgment ruling on it.

Who is exempt from the contributo unificato in employment cases?

In employment, public employment and social security disputes, those whose IRPEF taxable income, as shown in the latest tax return, is up to three times the limit for legal aid at the State's expense, i.e. 40,978.92 euros with the current limit, do not pay. The reason for the exemption must be declared in the conclusions of the initial filing.

When does the contributo unificato increase by half?

On appeal in civil and administrative cases, and when the party does not state its tax code in the initial filing. In tax proceedings also if the lawyer does not state their PEC address, and before the TAR if they do not state their PEC address and fax number. At the Court of Cassation the ordinary civil contribution doubles.

What happens if the contributo unificato is not paid?

In civil proceedings the case cannot be entered on the court docket unless at least 43 euros, or the lower contribution due by law, has been paid, except in cases of exemption (art. 14, paragraph 3.1). The Corte costituzionale (Constitutional Court), with judgment no. 137 of 2026, declared the questions raised about this rule unfounded or inadmissible.
