Looking for a personal loan but don't know which one to choose among the dozens of available offers? You're right to want clarity: the difference between a good loan and a mediocre one can be worth thousands of euros in interest. In this guide we use an example to show how the monthly payment and the cost of a loan are calculated, why the TAEG (APR) matters more than the TAN, how to get the lowest rate and how to simulate the right payment for your needs.

How much does a personal loan cost: a worked example

Offers change often and the final rate depends on the borrower's profile, so instead of a ranking of lenders here is a hypothetical example, with figures chosen only to show the calculation: 10,000 euros over 60 monthly payments, a TAN (nominal annual rate) of 7%, 200 euros of arrangement fees paid at disbursement and 2 euros of collection fees per payment.

Item Calculation Amount
Monthly payment (French amortisation) 10,000 × (0.07 ÷ 12) ÷ [1 − (1 + 0.07 ÷ 12)−60] 198.01 €
Total interest 198.01 × 60 − 10,000 1,880.60 €
Fees 200 + 2 × 60 320.00 €
Total cost of credit interest + fees 2,200.60 €
Total amount payable 10,000 + 2,200.60 12,200.60 €
TAEG (APR) annual rate that makes the amount received equal to all payments (instalments and fees) 8.6%

The TAN only measures interest. The TAEG is the total cost of credit (interest, commissions, taxes and the other charges known to the lender, excluding notary fees, plus insurance when it is required to obtain the loan) expressed as an annual percentage of the amount lent: it is defined by article 121 of the Italian Consolidated Banking Act, and the Bank of Italy sets the calculation method. In the example, without fees the TAEG would be 7.2%, already above the 7% TAN because payments are monthly; with 320 euros of fees it rises to 8.6%. That is why, for the same amount and duration, offers should be compared on the TAEG.

Hypothetical example for illustration only: it is not an offer or a market average. The actual rate and conditions depend on the lender and on your profile.

How to choose the best personal loan

The lowest rate isn't always the best choice. Here are the 5 key factors to evaluate before signing:

1. TAEG, not just TAN

The TAN (Nominal Annual Rate) is the "pure" interest rate, but it doesn't include ancillary costs. The TAEG (Annual Percentage Rate of Charge) is the number that truly matters: it includes origination fees, management charges, mandatory insurance costs, and any other expenses. Always compare the TAEG across offers.

2. Repayment flexibility

Some lenders offer the option to skip a payment in case of hardship, or to repay early without penalties. These options can make a big difference in the long run. Since 2010, by law, personal loans can be repaid early with a maximum penalty of 1% of the amount repaid (0.5% if the remaining term is one year or less), and no penalty at all if you repay the entire outstanding balance and it does not exceed 10,000 euros (art. 125-sexies of the Italian Consolidated Banking Act).

3. Disbursement times

If you're in a hurry, consider the timeline: some online lenders disburse within 24-48 hours, while traditional banks can take up to 2 weeks.

4. Insurance: mandatory or optional?

Many lenders offer life/job loss insurance. This is almost always optional, even though the advisor might present it as mandatory. Insurance can cost 3% to 10% of the financed amount. Carefully evaluate whether you truly need it.

5. Your credit profile

Advertised rates are the best ones, reserved for clients with an excellent credit profile. If you've had late payments in the past or already have other loans outstanding, the actual rate could be higher. Always request a personalized quote before comparing.

Personal loan: requirements to qualify

To apply for a personal loan in Italy, you generally need:

  • Age: between 18 and 75 years old (at loan maturity)
  • Residency: in Italy
  • Verifiable income: pay slip, CUD, tax return, or pension statement
  • Payment-to-income ratio: the monthly payment should not exceed 30-35% of net monthly income
  • No negative records as a bad payer in CRIF/SIC credit bureaus

For self-employed workers and VAT holders (Partita IVA), the process is more complex: you generally need the last 2 tax returns and your income must be stable. Our Partita IVA net income calculator helps you understand how much you can actually afford.

How much can I borrow? The 30% rule

Banks generally use the 30-35% payment-to-income ratio as a rule of thumb. Here's what that means in practice:

Net monthly income Maximum recommended payment Maximum amount (60 months) Maximum amount (84 months)
1,200 € 360 € ~18,000 € ~24,000 €
1,500 € 450 € ~23,000 € ~30,000 €
2,000 € 600 € ~30,000 € ~40,000 €
2,500 € 750 € ~38,000 € ~50,000 €
3,000 € 900 € ~46,000 € ~60,000 €

Indicative amounts with an average TAN of 7%. The actual amount depends on the rate applied and the applicant's profile.

Online loan vs in-branch: what's the difference

In recent years, online loans have gained ground thanks to lower costs and faster processing. Here's a comparison:

Online loan: generally offers lower rates (lenders save on branch costs and pass part of the savings on to the client), faster disbursement (24-72 hours in many cases), a fully digital process with electronic signature, and less sales pressure for add-on products.

In-branch loan: offers the ability to speak with an advisor in person, can be more flexible in evaluating complex cases, is preferable for very large amounts (over 30,000 €), and provides the opportunity to negotiate the rate.

Our advice: always request at least 2-3 online quotes before visiting a branch. You'll have a clear picture of the market and will be better positioned to negotiate.

How to get the best rate: 5 strategies

Here are the most effective strategies for getting better terms on your personal loan:

  1. Compare at least 3-4 offers: don't settle for the first proposal. The differences can be significant. Use online comparison sites like Facile.it, PrestitiOnline.it, or Segugio.it to get a complete picture.
  2. Improve your credit profile: pay bills on time, close unused revolving credit cards, and avoid making too many loan applications in a short period (each application is recorded in CRIF).
  3. Choose the right term: longer terms mean lower monthly payments but much higher total interest. Find the right balance between payment affordability and total cost.
  4. Consider a purpose-specific loan: purpose-specific loans (for a particular purchase, such as a car or home renovation) often have better rates than general-purpose loans.
  5. Ask if you're an existing customer: many banks offer preferential terms to their account holders. If you already have a current account, ask your bank first.

Mistakes to avoid when applying for a loan

After years of experience in the industry, these are the most common mistakes we see:

  • Looking only at the monthly payment: a low payment with a long term can cost much more in total interest. Always look at the total cost of credit.
  • Not reading the terms: origination fees, mandatory insurance, early repayment penalties... these are all costs that add up.
  • Borrowing more than you need: it's tempting to round up, but you pay interest on the entire amount. Only borrow what you truly need.
  • Accepting insurance without thinking: in many cases it's optional and expensive. Evaluate whether you really need it.
  • Not considering alternatives: for small amounts (under 3,000 €), a revolving credit card or bank overdraft might cost less. For a car purchase, leasing could be more advantageous.

Frequently asked questions about personal loans

How long does it take to get a personal loan?

It depends on the lender. The fastest online loans disburse within 24-48 hours of approval. Traditional banks generally take 5-15 business days. The longest phase is often gathering the documentation.

Can I get a loan if I have a fixed-term employment contract?

Yes, but with some limitations. The loan term generally cannot exceed the duration of your employment contract. Some institutions accept fixed-term contracts only if they have been renewed at least once or with a minimum tenure of 6 months.

What happens if I can't pay a monthly installment?

An occasional late payment incurs late-payment interest (generally 2-4% above the contractual rate). After 2-3 consecutive missed payments, you risk being flagged as a bad payer in credit bureaus (CRIF), which will make it very difficult to obtain credit in the future. If you foresee difficulties, contact the lender immediately to arrange a suspension or restructuring.

Is it worth consolidating multiple loans into one?

Debt consolidation can be worthwhile if you have multiple outstanding loans with different rates. By combining them into a single loan, you can get a lower overall monthly payment and simplify management. However, extending the term may mean paying more total interest. Use our calculator to do the math.
