How the Car Insurance Calculator works
Our calculator gives you an indicative estimate of your motor third-party (RC Auto) premium, based on the main factors insurers use to price a policy.
What drives the premium
- Engine power (kW): more powerful cars carry higher premiums, because the risk of serious accidents is greater.
- Bonus-malus class (CU): Italy's universal no-claims system runs from class 1 (best, biggest discount) to class 18 (worst); new drivers start at class 14. This calculator covers classes 1 to 14. Every claim-free year moves you down one class.
- Age and years holding a licence: new drivers and the under-25s pay significantly more.
- Region of residence: areas with more accidents (Campania and Apulia, for example) have higher rates according to IVASS data.
- Fuel type: electric and hybrid cars get discounts, thanks to lower risk and incentives for sustainable mobility.
- Kilometres driven per year: the less you drive, the statistically lower your chance of being involved in a claim.
Types of cover
- Basic third-party cover: the cover required by law, which pays for damage you cause to others (people and property).
- Third-party + theft and fire: adds protection against total or partial theft and fire damage to your own vehicle.
- Fully comprehensive: the widest cover, which also pays for damage to your own vehicle in an at-fault accident, plus vandalism and weather events.
How to save on car insurance
- Always compare several quotes: the gap between insurers can be more than 50%.
- Fit a black box: many insurers offer 10-20% off with a telematics device.
- Raise the excess: a higher excess brings the annual premium down.
- Drive carefully: keep your bonus-malus class low by avoiding claims.
- Consider paying annually: paying in instalments often adds a 5-8% surcharge.
The universal bonus-malus class (CU)
Since 2006 Italy has used the Universal Merit Class, running from 1 (best) to 18 (worst). New drivers start at class 14. Every claim-free year moves you down one class, while an at-fault claim moves you up two. The CU class is the single factor with the biggest effect on what your policy costs.
